INTERCOSTAL NERVES

ORIGIN: Ventral rami of T1-T11 nerves.

COURSE/DISTRIBUTION: These take origin from the small branches of ventral rami of thoracic nerves. They run in the costal grooves of their corresponding ribs under the posterior intercostal artery. The superior anterior intercostal artery later replaces this artery in the same groove. They give off collateral and lateral cutaneous branches before they reach the costal angle and then run forward to reach the anterior extreme of the intercostal spaces.
