Esophagus begins at level of C6 vertebra in the neck. The abdominal esophagus extends from the esophageal opening at the level of T10 to the cardio-esophageal junction at the level of T11. It is only about 1.75cm long.

Arteries:

The esophagus is supplied by the following arteries.

Esophageal branches of the inferior thyroid artery

Esophageal branches of descending thoracic aorta

Esophageal branches of the bronchial arteries

Esophageal branches of left gastric artery

bullet

Esophageal branches of left inferior phrenic artery

Veins:

Cervical esophagus drains into the inferior thyroid vein; thoracic into the azygos vein, hemiazygos and the accessory hemiazygos veins, and the abdominal part into the azygos vein and also the left gastric vein.

Nerves:

Parasympathetic fibers are from the vagus and right and left recurrent laryngeal nerves. Sympathetic fibers are from the cervical and thoracic sympathetic trunks via the greater splanchnic nerves.
