Sacral vertebrae have the following distinguishing features

  •                      The five segments are fused to form a single bone.

  •                      Only the first has a superior articular process.

  •                      Dorsal and ventral sacral foramina represent the intervertebral foramina of the upper vertebral segments for the transmission of sacral nerves.

  •                      Median sacral crest are fused spines.

  •                      Intermediate sacral crest are fused articular processes.

  •                      Lateral sacral crest are fused transverse processes

Other features (when compared with other vertebrae) are as follows
